BMT at Lackland Air Base was established in 1942, five years before the Air Force was officially designated as a separate service. The first group of women in the Air Force, known as WAAFs, came to Lackland in 1948. However, they did not participate in activities such as weapons training, bivouacs, or field marches. Racial segregation in the military ended in 1949 following an order from President Harry Truman. Recruits were then assigned based only on gender and day of arrival. Later that same year, in 1949, the training instructors, also known as "t.i's," received their title due to the realization that their duties went far beyond teaching drill. The start of the Korean War presented challenges for Air Force basic training. Lackland's capacity for recruits was about 25,000, but a huge influx in January 1951 resulted in that number doubling. To accommodate these recruits, a tent city was constructed, providing 10,000 recruits with bare cots. This situation caught the attention of Congress, and funding was soon allocated for the construction of new training facilities and barracks. In 1962, the first recruit housing and training center opened, equipped with air-conditioned classrooms, dormitories, and covered drill areas for 200 trainees. As the U.S. became involved in the Vietnam War in 1965, BMT adapted accordingly. Some recruits underwent 22 days of basic training followed by eight days of technical training.
